Necker Island

British Virgin Islands

If your wildest dreams, your inner child, and your luxury-loving alter ego all joined forces to create the ultimate escape, it would probably look a lot like Necker Island. The Paradise Playground Where Padel Meets Party

Necker Island’s story reads like a Bond-meets-beach fairytale. Back in 1945, the island was bought by an Englishman for the modest sum of £250 and later sold in 1957 for a sizable profit of £1,500.  However, it was in 1976 that a 26-year-old Richard Branson flew over the British Virgin Islands in search of a honeymoon-worthy hideaway to impress his girlfriend (now wife). He set his sights on Necker, a rugged, undeveloped outcrop of paradise and, despite a lack of funds at the time, made a cheeky offer. A few years, a few hundred thousand pounds, and a bold vision later, the island became his. But what was planned to be his home from home was deemed ‘simply too beautiful not to share’, so what began as a romantic stunt is now one of the world’s most legendary private escapes.

Since then, Necker has welcomed rockstars, presidents, royalty and change-makers. It has survived hurricanes, hosted flamingo breeding projects, pioneered solar-powered luxury and even been the site of island-wide survival experiments (yes, really). But through it all, its soul remains intact: a place where nature, freedom and play take centre stage.
